August provided memorable events at the Centre and allowed us to get to know a number of different ministries working in Nicaragua. A great blessing to our community was the Word of Life Medical team, comprised of members from across the United States and brought medical attention to hundreds of people in our community. We also enjoyed having Greenwood Community Church at the Centre and the Children's Retreat they held with children from La Chureca, the Managua city dump where thousands of people currently live. Our good friend Rip Jenkins of Hope House International also brought a team from Ottawa and we had a number of events with Nicaraguan ministries including a number of Baptist churches, the Church of Christ, Hosanna Central and World Vision

The children of this neighbourhood have little opportunity to play, discover, explore and learn during the critical early years of their minds' development. Their mothers do not have the time or the resources to devote to early childhood education. This puts these children at a life- long disadvantage educationally.
In March, 2009 Threefold Ministries and Skylark Retreat Centre launched the Best Start Pre-School Program to help these children and their mothers have the best start possible in their education.
Three mornings per week a group of 14 two-year-olds meets to play, discover and learn in a structured environment. The pre-school program is co-op style with each mother committing 2 mornings per month to serve as a Helper. In this way the mothers are able to receive "on the job training" to help them learn how to participate in and stimulate the development of their children.
Here the children are taught about God's love along with their ABCs. They are also taught how to simply play, how to become little artists and musicians and how to explore and learn from their world.
Every month the mothers gather for a Saturday afternoon "Mom's Day Out" which is a time to encourage the mothers, pamper them a little and offer them some advice and training to help them grow in their important role. |
